Meet Our Team

Tanya Bingham, LCSW

Licensed Clinical Social Worker

I became familiar with the value of trauma work when I started working with veterans who had experienced homelessness, combat tours, and peace time.

I learned that many of their responses to life’s stressors were a function of their experience in the military and as a means to survive.

I provided assistance to help them reintegrate to civilian life by addressing various issues including substance use, behavioral health issues and vocational support.

Helping You Overcome Trauma By Leaning Into Your Strengths

I earned a Master’s degree in Social Work at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work at Yeshiva University in New York (2007) and am certified in Cognitive Process Therapy (CPT). I have worked with community mental health programs, veterans, and immigrants to the United States. My passion for supporting and nurturing others began at an early age and has propelled me to the field of Social Work.

I began my career working with the veteran population at the James J. Peters Veterans Administration (Bronx, NY), specializing in trauma work. I continued my work with veterans for 13+ years providing individual, couple and family therapy with the homeless population with an emphasis on those struggling with dual diagnosis (substance use and mental health). As an immigrant and a minority, I understand the significance of diversity and representation as well as its impact when serving others. I am here to provide guidance and support, when life challenges appear to be overwhelming. As a social worker, I will assist you in bringing out help you your own intrinsic strengths and skills to help you navigate the various obstacles life may throw at you while resuming your normal day-to-day life.

Empowering Immigrants To Heal And Thrive With Ease

Immigrants have a unique experience in that they are learning a new culture while upholding the culture they are leaving behind. The key things needed in helping immigrants adjust to this country is support around parenting, societal norms and education around our legal system. My personal experience as a migrant to the United States has shown me the importance of having support to successfully transition across cultures. Understanding how to balance the new cultural norms while maintaining your cultural values is beneficial to building autonomy and confidence to navigate the change.

In my experience, immigrants often find it difficult to understand the level of government oversight and involvement in their family lives and child rearing decisions. In order to help them understand what is socially acceptable in marriage and in childcare/ rearing, I offer support through education and creating a plan for this adjustment.

As a Program Coordinator at the Community Mental Health Affiliates (CMHA-Waterbury) overseeing work with our immigrant and undocumented families, we assisted families in getting legal resident status. As well as working as a liaison and advocate for those who were part of the Children and Family Services due to their differing cultural and child rearing practices. Families received parent coaching and psycho education around parenting norms in the United States.
