Help! All the Therapists Are Booked!
I have noticed an influx of calls with people wanting to engage in therapy. However, because of this many therapists are quickly filling up their schedules. I get it, you’ve decided to engage in therapy and want to get in pretty quickly. You may have even called a few therapists and were told they were not accepting new clients at this time. After a few calls, this can get pretty frustrating.
If you find yourself in this situation, I have a few tips for you:
Get on their waitlist
Many therapists offer a waitlist option for a number of reasons, mainly because changes can occur pretty quickly. A client may have completed treatment or stopped showing up and that leaves room in their schedule. Signing up for their waitlist ensures you will have first dibs when there is an opening on their schedule. If you are not experiencing an urgent issue, this is a great options.
Ask for a referral
The therapist may have someone in their network who they are sure has some openings. Typically, I engage with other therapists pretty often and can get a sense of their style and offerings. Asking for a referral increases the likelihood you will find a therapist who can meet your needs.
Ask EAP or your PCP
Reach out to your employer’s EAP as they may have a therapist who has immediate openings. EAP typically covers 3-4 sessions at no cost to you and you have the option to continue working with the therapist (if you choose). You can also check with your primary care physician (PCP) as they may have an in-office therapist they can refer you to.
Other options to consider: Online therapy, Talk Space, visit a local non-profit clinic
I know it can be a task when you’re really interested in getting involved in therapy. There are options! Congratulations on taking the step to discover more about yourself and heal. I hope these tips were helpful.
